Julius Caesar Notes
Published in Paperback by Cliffs Notes (January, 1986)
Authors: Cliffs Notes Editors and James Vickers
Average review score:

EXTREMELY HELPFUL FOR THE COMMON STUDENT
This book helped me understand and study "Julius Caesar" more than most textbooks do, and certainly better than reading it over and over again. I had trouble with decifering the old English text sometimes, and this book clears up meanings while presenting a clear theme, involved analysis of characters, summary, and an explaination of each scene.

Understanding the structure and characters of Julius Caesar
James Vickers' Cliffs Notes for Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" begins with a short biography of the Bard that focuses on what little the historical record tells us about the Bard of Avon. A Brief Synopsis of the Play is followed by a List of Characters that not only tells us who they are but their primary roles in the play. The Summary and Commentary section of the volume breaks down the play scene by scene, and the best way of using this or any other little yellow book with the black stripes is to read the commentary after you have read each scene of the play. This is especially important with Shakespeare because the dialogue is so important and Vickers does not work in as many choice lines as some of the other Cliffs Notes for Shakespeare plays. You cannot deal with Shakespeare if you do not know the key lines. The last section dealing with Character Analyses looks as Caesar, Antony, Octavius, Brutus and Cassius, referring back to the analysis already established regarding the individual scenes. What you will not get from this volume if you are teaching/reading "Julius Caesar" is how the play touches upon the political realities of Elizabethean England. But Vickers does an excellent job throughout of capturing how Shakespeare uses the play to manipulate the audience. Remember, the celebrated funeral oration by Marc Antony is being listened to on stage by a Roman mob that is being watched by an audience of Londoners in the theater. This is one of the better jobs at capturing how Shakespeare constructed a play and an above-average Cliffs Notes edition.

Great Notes!
I needed cliff notes for English as we were reading the play Julius Caesar. I looked around and finally found these. They are great! They are in modern version and they go along with most/lots of HS English books today. THANKS!

Keys to Parenting Your Anxious Child (Barron's Parenting Keys)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (July, 1996)
Author: Katharina Manassis
Average review score:

Childhood anxiety
I read this book when it first came out. It helped me to feel as if I was not alone. Some of the suggestions were implemented and were successful. Charting behavior in particular I found to be beneficial. An excellent read. Good advice for parents who are at there wits end. This is the book we have been waiting for.

Dr. M. Branches Out
I saw Dr. Manassis from about 1994-1997 at the the Hospital for Sick Children's Psychiatric Department in Toronto. She is widely regarded as a leading Canadian paediatric expert in Anxiety disorders. I am pleased to see that she has written this book. Her advice on childhood anxiety is valuable, and I am a living testament to her expertise and proficiency in her work. I wish Dr. Manassis great success for this book and recommend it to parents of anxious children everywhere.

Keys to Parenting your Anxious Child
This book provides a wealth of information for parents who want to help their children learn to overcome anxiety. It explains what anxiety is (and is not), how it affects each member of the family, how to cope, how to communicate effectively with your child, and how to stop undesirable behavior. It addresses the effects of certain parenting styles and how these styles can help or hinder progress toward better mental health. There is a chapter that discusses medications; if they are necessary and which ones are helpful. It also addresses how to communicate with others about your child's current situation (school, etc.) Most importantly, the principals taught in this book can be followed and applied easily. I am the parent of an anxious adolescent, and I found this book to be helpful, encouraging, and enlightening. I highly recommend this book.

King Oedipus, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone (Cliffs Notes)
Published in Paperback by Cliffs Notes (August, 1965)
Author: Robert J. Milch
Average review score:

Not Too Bad
Leave it to Cliff Notes to produce another fine study aid to classic literature pieces. The insights were intuitive and well thought out and it made the difficult plays to read and understand quite easy. I would recommend it to anyone having to read any of the included plays.

Understanding Greek Tragedy and Sophocles' Theban Plays
One of the nice things about Robert J. Milch's Cliffs Notes for the Theban Plays of Sophocles, is that like his other volumes on Greek tragedies, he begins with an outstanding section on the Background of Greek Tragedy as well as Aristotle on Tragedy from the "Poetics." No matter which Greek plays you happen to be teaching/reading, Milch sets up the particular structure of these plays with episodes and stasimons, the theatrical equipment of the day such as orchestra and eccyclmea, and such key literary concepts as mimesis, catharsis, harmartia, peripetia and anagnorisis. I especially appreciate the fact that Milch employs the original Greek terms for concepts that are, of course, perfectly suited to understanding Greek tragedies.

After providing the Mythological Background of Oedipus and his haunted family, Milch looks at "Oedipus the King," "Oedipus at Colonus" and "Antigone" in turn, providing summaries and commentaries for each specific part of the play (parados, episods, stasimons, exodus). Each play concludes with some general commentary and there is a excellent Note on Translations at the end of the volume that provides examples of various translations of the same verses. Because Milch is covering three plays in this volume, there is not as much commentary as you would usually find in this little yellow book with the black stripes. However, the introductory material on Greek tragedies should work quite well to give teachers/students a framework with which to explore these plays in the grand tradition of cookie-cutter criticism. Final Note: There is a reference to Oedipus in Homer's "Iliad," that indicates he was slain in battle, which would suggest he was not blind. In turn, this suggests that Sophocles might have come up with something new when he had Oedipus blind himself. In that case, all the overbearing foreshadowing that appears early in "Oedipus the King" might not be as blatant as it seems. Food for thought.

Great!
These cliff notes are great! They give you an indepth analyzation of all the characters, a great background, a summary and an analysis for every part of the book. These a great if you are not familiar with Greek literature or are having any trouble.

Kingsnakes and Milksnakes : Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, Behavior, and Training (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals)

buy it for the photos and the rest is lagniappe
the photos are the best of any of the "kingsnake" books, the maps are useful, and the care etc. sections are adequate.

The best kingsnake guide for beginners
I have been involved in keeping and breeding kingsnakes for years and this is by far the best book available in its price range. Packed full of photos and current husbandry techniques, I highly recommend it to both novice and experienced hobbyists. The photographs alone are worth the price of the book--a must read for any kingsnake or milksnake enthusiast!

The book is useful, interesting , and well priced.
This is an excellent book. We just got a Kingsnake and used the book to classify it; we found it informative for feeding and other care procedures. The book was well priced, had good photographs and the text was interesting, giving useful information about the hybrid Florida Intergrade Kingsnake (our pet) and how large it will get. John Ric

Let's Review: Sequential Mathematics, Course I (Barron's Review Course)

math review
i wanna review everything in the barrons math regent review, for course 1

Great Book, But needs double checking in answers
Even though I am not taking Sequential 1 Regents, but I am getting Math A regents. This book is the better version math review compared to the Math A book. This book contains a more indepth review of the Math A cirriculum. Logic in this book is not taught so well compared to Kaplan's Sequential 1 book, but is very insightful. Even though the new math cirriculum does not have logic, if you learn it, you can say, I learned it... HAHA and you didn't! This book also contains ways of interpreting problems. They literally show you how to read the problem, and solve it out algebraically. They give you keywords to look out for to help you solve the problems. The bad thing about this book is that there are somewhat moderate or in other people's view lots of errors in the book. Sometimes, the answer for the given problem is incorrect. Sometimes, you might even find a few number typos all around the book.

THE WORST THING ABOUT THE BOOK WAS THE FACT THAT THERE ARE ANSWERS ONLY TO THE ODD NUMBERED QUESTIONS, AND ALSO ONLY 2 REGENTS NOW IN THE BOOK! The book used from years before this had at least 3 regents, but now its only 2 :(. Also sometimes when you do the even number questions, and you want to see the answers for them, they dont have it due to the fact there are answers only to odd number questions :(.

Despite this, this book gives very detailed explanations, and to my opinion it contains more material than the new Math A book. So go out there and get it! THIS BOOK WILL STOP PRINTING AFTER JANUARY 2002 DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE SEQUENTIAL MATH 1 REGENTS WILL BE PHASED OUT AND REPLACED BY MATH A. SO GO GET IT!

Excellent.
This is a great complement to any textbook. It can also be used as a last-minute study guide. I used it to prepare for my Regents exam.

Manx Cats: Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Grooming, and Behavior (Complete Pet Owner's Manual)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (March, 1999)
Authors: Karen Commings and Barron's
Average review score:

Wonderful, accurate (for a change) writing.
I have bred and shown Manx cats for the past 11 years and this is the only book that I know of that is completely factual about the breed. There is a lot of printed matter on the breed which is either misleading or downright wrong. This book gives a new owner or prospective owner a good idea of what to expect from a Manx cat. The pictures are not up to the standard of the writing (one picture is of a Japenese Bobtail), but that certainly doesn't ruin the book. It is not so expensive that it is prohibitive as a research source while being attractive enough to add to your library of cat books. I think it is a book that all Manx owners could benefit from owning and I recommend it to anyone who adopts one of my kittens/cats.

Manx Cats Review
Karen Commings has thoroughly researched and compiled an excellent "owner's manual" for the first-time Manx owner. Through contacting breeders and asking health, behaviour, and care questions, she has prepared a book which any Manx breeder (of which I am one) is confident to give to a new kitten purchaser and feel good about it. Despite an unfortunate photo mixup with one picture, Karen's book contains accurate and dependable information about the breed. Anyone considering buying a Manx or who has already purchased one will find the book informative and fun (did I mention, it's also a good read!).

Most accurate book about Manx cats, yet
This is one of the most factual books about Manx I've found. Very accurate and helpful. Great book and a great value.

Marketing (Barron's Business Review Series)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (March, 1993)
Author: Richard L. Sandhusen
Average review score:

Good overview of marketing, quick reference, easy reading
This book is a good overview of marketing, covering various aspects useful to a marketing manager. Designed for reading by those with a limited marketing background.

It is a good quick reference source for those with a marketing background.

It is not intended as an in-depth look at any particular aspect of marketing, however.

Good as primer or reference
Most marketing textbooks tend to be thematic, flashy, cluttered with "examples," and to a certain extent, they tend to extol the virtues of marketing.

Not this book.

Sanhusen gives a detailed, comprehensive review of the information presented in an introductory marketing class, in a format that can serve both as a primer and a reference. By omitting long explanations and numerous examples to illustrate a single point, this book presents the information in a straight forward, no nonsense manner.

A fictitious company is presented in the first chapter, and it is used to reinforce key points in subsequent chapters. Other examples are not overtly woven into the fabric of the text, but discrete sections. If you are cramming for an exam, you can skip over them without the fear of missing any critical information.

Compared to the other marketing texts I have read, this is by far the best, and would make an excellent resource for preparing for the CLEP marketing exam or as a supplement to a college text.

Highly readable and very informative
I used this book as a supplement to a (much drier) marketing textbook. I found that the author's easy writing style and use of real-life business situations made even difficult concepts easy to understand, and my enjoyment level of the course was greatly increased. Thanks for the help--I ended up with an "A" in the class!

Keys to Risks and Rewards of Penny Stocks (Barron's Business Keys)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (May, 1990)
Authors: Robert L. Frick, Mary Lynne Vellenga, and Mary Lynne Vellings
Average review score:

great for the right investor
This book was excellent if you plan on investing in a small company with hopes of it becoming a big one over a time period of months. It is not helpful for the day trader, looking for day trading strategies.

Good terms
Good explanation of the terms and basic rules of penny stock investing. The groud rules for investing in penny stocks are set and you pick up the lead and apply the information. I also read The Guide for penny stock investing by Donny Lowy. Donny takes the next step and directs you step by step on how to choose a penny stock that has the potential to skyrocket.

Great book for the small company investor
This book gives easy to understand methods to help the investor reduce the risk of investing in penny stocks. Each major point of investing is broken into it's own chapter. Each chapter is easy to read and understand. I found the book very helpful for quick checks on companies that I may want to follow. I highly recommend this book to new investors.

Let's Review: Biology (Barron's Review Course Series)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (August, 1995)
Authors: Scott Hunter and G. Scott Hunter
Average review score:

Not that good
Usually when you are looking for a review book, you want one that has a balance of review text and questions. This book is one of the better biology review books out there right now, but there are much better books. In various cases, this book simply states facts rather than elaborating on the actual idea in order for students to learn the material better. For example, read the chapter on biochemistry and you wil see that it doesn't bother to explain bonding in depth, or to the extent as you would in a class. For honors biology students, I would reccomend an SAT 2 book, such as Kaplan, or the "N and N Review Book," which is not for the Living environment curriculum. However, it follows the old regents syllabus, and has a source of amazing questions along with a concise review of facts, solidified with diagrams and key concepts. For Biology, I think that the only Barron's book you would want to buy is the Regents Exams and Answers booklet, which provides the real questions, as most ofyou probably know. Since the book has some review and a few questions, I had to give it 3 / 5 stars.

Resource material for the NYS Living Environment curriculum
Finally! A tool for New York's biology teachers and students! When the New York State Education Department published its most recent curriculum for high school biology, many components were changed, but little course content was specified. This left New York's biology teachers asking 'What do we teach?' and biology students asking 'What do we learn?' LET'S REVIEW BIOLOGY: THE LIVING ENVIRONMENT finally provides some professional guidance to help students and teachers answer these questions. Suggested material and practice questions are provided that help 'put flesh on the bones' of the core curriculum for New York State's biology program. Schools can use it to design local curricula; students can use it to 'nail' the Regents exam! A 'must have' for biology teachers and students!

This is a great book for reviewing for the Regents Test.
I recently purchased Barrons Lets Review Biology about a month ago. I was very pleased of the easy to read layout and the answers explained section. The book has given me a better understanding of Biology and has prepared me for the Regents examination in June. I would definitely recomend this book to anyone, no matter what their status is in Biology

Mastering German: Level 2 (Foreign Service Institute)
Published in Audio Cassette by Barrons Educational Audio (September, 1992)
Author: Barrons Educational Series
Average review score:

Excellent text with not-very- useful tapes
A most comprehensive text of twenty-four units, each containing basic sentences, applicable grammar and various kinds of drills for reinforcement. Many of the drills give you English sentences on one side of the page and the translation to the German on the other side. I found it very useful to look at the English sentence, try to translate it into the German and then check my translation with that of the book. However, there were no directions anywhere on how to use the audiotapes. The tapes have German speakers speak the sentences and the drills, but I see no way to use them independently of the book other than to hear how the words are pronounced. If someone had spoken the drills in English, allowed a moment for me to translate into German, then have the German speaker give the correct translation, I would be able to use the tape without the book in front of me. However, this is not to be. The book has helped me a great deal. Unfortunately, I can't say as much for the tapes.

Simpy the best there is!
I have spent many years searching for ways to bring my German proficiency as close to total fluency as possible. When I found this package I thought I'd give it a try. Five years later, I still use it to keep my skills fresh. Barron's drill approach is the best way, in my opinion, to gain confidence in speach and comprehension. I spent four years in Switzerland on business and had very little difficulty adapting to my new life thanks to my ability to communicate effectively. I would suggest this to anyone who already has a solid foundation in German, but is looking for that extra something.

Excellent overall
I highly recommend this product for those who know some german already and really want to solidify things like grammar and vocabulary. After using these tapes, I passed my college's placement exam, which I had failed twice in the past. Learning grammar from speaking is much better than learning from a book.
